Abbreviation list extractor

Paste your manuscript text and get the abbreviations you defined, the ones you used without defining, and how often each is used.

This tool needs JavaScript, because it works in your browser and sends nothing. Turn JavaScript on to use it. How it works is explained below.

How it works

Columns are separated by tabs, so the list can be pasted into a table. An abbreviation used only once could be written in full instead.

Common abbreviations that need no definition (for example DNA) also appear in the second list; ignore them.

Worked example: "Acute myocardial infarction (AMI)" gives AMI = Acute myocardial infarction.

These tools support writing; they do not replace the Instructions for Authors or the advice of your co-authors and institution.

Questions

How are definitions found?

A phrase followed by the abbreviation in brackets, for example "percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)", where the capitals match the first letters of the phrase.

Why is an abbreviation listed as undefined?

It appears in capitals without such a definition in the text you pasted. Define it at its first use, or spell it out.
